Care for Your Teeth by Caring for Your Toothbrush

The toothbrush is one of the most important tools in maintaining good oral health. However, your toothbrush itself needs attention, specifically replacement on a regular basis, to guarantee protection of your teeth and your general health.

The mouth is home to microorganisms that can cause infections. These tiny organisms can easily be transferred from the mouth to the brush and then back to the mouth. Bacteria may also be present in the areas where toothbrushes are stored and even in the boxes in which they are sold.

The body is usually able to fend off harmful microbes, and there is insufficient evidence to prove whether bacteria on toothbrushes can cause infections. However, the American Dental Association recommends that toothbrushes be replaced every three to four months, sooner if the bristles become frayed. In other words, keep your teeth fresh with a fresh toothbrush.
